COMPASSION & EMPATHY

It comes from the heart. The heart is the seat of the soul. It is a natural impulse and it feels so fulfilling when we respond to it. But to confirm this nagging analysis, I consulted with several clerics of various Faith denominations. It was a philosophical debate. You see, the traditionalists prefer to start their argument negatively in order to arrive at the Truth. I learned that it was a more objective approach and more constructive than finding justifications for an abstract theory.

As occurs in lucid and open debates, I also learned something new that shed light on many issues in my life. While walking with this particular cleric of another Faith than mine, a disturbed lady caught our attention in a public space. He stopped to observe. I attempted to explain how I perceived her situation, the difficulties she was encountering, and how she must be feeling confronted with an unusual coldness and lack of sympathy.

He turned around and said, “You are just displaying a perfect example of compassion, but do you realize the consequence of your approach?”

- No. What consequence could there be in analyzing the situation? When I feel her plight and if there is anything I can do, I will do it willingly.

- You are relieving her pain by sharing it with her. As you identify with her, you are taking it upon yourself as well. Mystically, your empathy will bring you Divine blessings, but you will first succumb to similar circumstances!

I was offended, thinking he wished me harm. I was also puzzled attempting to make sense of what he said. Not until, I found myself in the habit of sympathizing that I realized it was said in good faith. Whenever I went through hardships, his words echoed in my ears. I realized how true it was.

Many years later I met him again and thanked him for his words, explaining what I had experienced. He consoled me by saying this, “Maintain the compassion and empathy in your nature. This, you can’t change. Now, learn to dedicate the consequences you endure to a higher purpose, and then, be thankful for the protection and blessings you receive.”

I chose to share this intimate lesson I learned, hoping it will enlighten and encourage you. Remain blessed!
