Make a difference with yourself, others will notice the difference in you, impacting your life and those of others. Be a positive and constructive influencer through your appearance, disposition, and attitude. Inspire yourself and inspire others. Ask yourself how do those you admire impact you.

Since childhood, I was always praised for my drawings. At school, I excelled in art. My favorite drawing subjects were portraits and figure drawing, predominantly women whom I thought were beautiful. Men around me asked, why not men? I don’t find anything special in them 😊. To add diversity, I eventually drew distinguished-looking elderly men I admired, not for their physical appearance, but for their personality. Listening to their experiences, I unknowingly metamorphosed into the best I could wish for myself at my age, today at 69. When I look back at my drawings, I realize that I even resemble them. How would you like to look as you grow older? Start with how others impact you today.

Through them, I learned that to be true to oneself, it is essential to identify one’s strengths and qualities, and firmly stand by them despite all the punches we receive through life. But we should also acknowledge and transcend our weaknesses to become stronger as we roll with these punches.

To start with oneself, only 2 close friends of confidence are required, ideally male and female, as well as a journal for record purposes. Start with their current assessment of you, your strengths, weaknesses, and their recommendations in the form of the suggested chart below, as the 1st page of your new journal. You are free to modify my suggestion below to suit your purpose.

APPEARANCE — PERSONALITY — RECOMMENDATIONS

Body language — Facial language — (Influence & Effect)

Posture — Eye contact

Grooming — Attentive listening

Physiology — Voice

Attire — Responsiveness

Poise — Engaging

Mannerisms — Words

Behavior — Personalization

Manners — Composure

· They say that the 1st impression is a lasting impression. I believe that they are referring to physical perception. However, I say that for a lasting impact, take it one step higher by working on improving your personality because both are inseparable.

· I would suggest that you start by upgrading your qualities while taking the slower path of transforming your weaknesses into strengths.

· Your objectives are best predetermined through your current assessment, by setting a time frame for each set of traits to be improved — ideally, every 3 months.

· Set them in order of priority, starting with the most difficult weakness.

· Mr. Google will be a useful companion for research through your trajectory.

· If you do not have the will and determination to endure a long haul, it is best not to start.

· To measure your progress, your 2 friends and your journal will be the yardsticks of your assessment. A treasure trove when you revert back to them anytime in the future.

(I shall be glad to co-author a book with you about your experience!)

· While you jot down your own daily efforts, assessments, and recommendations, ensure that your periodic evaluations are made quarterly.

The concealed part of your personality traits is how you react to emotional triggers such as provocations, fear, sadness, joy, etc. A closer approximation may pop the glossy image you are creating for yourself and your community. We know of countless celebrities who have fallen from grace because they have no composure. That is the reason I emphasize that the change starts from within, in priority. After all, you are expected to be inspiring to others by adding a dash of empathy and compassion, thereby shining brighter.

You are improving yourself for yourself primarily, for those whom you love, and for society as a whole. The combination of all these traits and characteristics shall fuse into an improved personality. You will succeed in optimizing yourself. By so doing, you shall be adding an aura of magnitude around you making your presence notable wherever you are. Should that not be what everyone should seek to achieve through their own unique self?
